Founded in 1994 by Stephen Ross Dooley, a Minnesota native with a degree in Enology from UC Davis, the winery has grown from humble beginnings—just 19 barrels—to producing approximately 4,500 cases annually.
Stephen’s journey took him from crafting apple and rhubarb wines in his parents’ basement to honing his skills in Napa Valley, South Africa, and Australia before settling in the Edna Valley.
At Stephen Ross Wine Cellars, the philosophy is clear: exceptional wines begin in the vineyard.
The winery emphasizes sustainable practices, sourcing grapes exclusively from SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certified vineyards. Their estate, Stone Corral Vineyard in the Edna Valley AVA, was planted in 2001 and is dedicated solely to Pinot Noir.
The vineyard’s southeast-facing slopes and proximity to the Pacific Ocean provide a cool climate ideal for cultivating this delicate varietal.
Stephen Ross Wine Cellars has garnered acclaim for its diverse range of wines. Their Pinot Noirs, particularly from the Stone Corral Vineyard, are celebrated for their elegance and complexity.
The 2021 Pinot Noir from the San Luis Obispo Coast received a 94-point rating from Wine Enthusiast and was designated as an Editor’s Choice.
In addition to Pinot Noir, their Chardonnay offerings, such as the 2022 Edna Valley Chardonnay, have been praised for their balance and finesse, earning a 92-point rating from Wine Enthusiast.
